First edition. Copy number 23 of 130 copies. An outstanding presentation copy inscribed by Wharton to her friend, advisor, and favorite editor Rutger Jewett, of Appleton: “For Rutger Jewett with best Christmas wishes Edith Wharton 1926.”

After sending New Year’s greeting and her thanks for a gift, Wharton notes that since her arrival six weeks ago, she has done little but leisure walks among the ruins of the Château d’Hyères. She vows, “I am beginning the New Year with the stern resolution of getting to work again tomorrow!”
