LAI FONG, attributed. Canton Fishing Village
Albumen print, mounted. 8 x 10 ¾ inches. Manuscript caption in ink on mount: “Canton.”
This is an excellent photograph of life on the Pearl River in 19th century Canton (Guangzhou) attributed to the great 19th century Chinese photographer Lai Fong.
This fine photograph, attributed to the renowned 19th century Chinese photographer Lai Fong, of a small fishing village documents an ancient way of life in Guangzhou that has all but disappeared. In the early 19th century before Guangzhou grew into the largest metropolis and foreign trade port in Southern China small fishing villages covered the coastline. This 19th century photograph attributed to Lai Fong is an invaluable visual record of the Pearl River Delta of the past.
