This iconic, 7-foot long image of San Francisco is one of the landmarks of 19th-century American photography. “The photographs show the extraordinary extent of a city that had come into existence a mere thirty years before and which would be destroyed by earthquake and subsequent fires thirty years later” (Getty Museum Journal). Seamlessly combining a series of eleven photographs, Muybridge created a 360 degree view of the city, producing what Rebecca Solnit calls “an impossible sight, a vision of the city in all directions, a transformation of a circular space into a linear photograph.”

This portrait, titled Honovi - Walpi Snake Priest, with Totokya Day Painting, was published as a photogravure in The North American Indian, volume 12, plate 408, c.1910
This is a splendid original glass plate made for Curtis’s The North American Indian, the greatest photographic work on Native Americans. Curtis devoted the twelfth volume of The North American Indian to the Hopi. He wrote of this photograph of Honovi, “This plate depicts the accoutrement of a Snake dancer on the day of the Antelope dance (see Volume XII, pages 146-149). The right hand grasps a pair of eagle-feathers – the ‘snake whip’ – and the left a bag of ceremonial meal. Honovi was one of the author’s principal informants.”

(English) An Extraordinary Confederate Photograph and Autograph Album of Dr. R. L. C. White, with his signature dated December 23, 1859 in the first volume. Lebanon, Tennessee, 1859-1862
MORE THAN 100 SOUTHERN BOYS WHO WENT TO WAR. This is a unique photographic record of young men, from across the South, most of whom fought for the Confederacy. The collection comprises 125 rare salt prints made in 1859-1862. All but eight of the men represented in these albums went on to serve in the Confederate military, in a total of 88 units. Four fought for the Union, and four remained neutral. 13 were killed in action, 24 were wounded in action, and 24 became prisoners of war. The men fought in many of the war’s major engagements including Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Shiloh, Chancellorsville, and others.
