“The principles of Jefferson are the definitions and axioms of free society.” – Abraham Lincoln
JEFFERSON, THOMAS. The Writings of Thomas Jefferson … [edited by] Henry A. Washington
Washington: Taylor & Maury, 1853-54
Nine volumes. Plates. Contemporary half brown morocco, bound for financier and congressman Edwin B. Morgan, with his name at the foot of each spine. Minor wear and touch-ups. A very good set.
FIRST EDITION of Jefferson’s writings to attempt to be comprehensive, including his principal essays, papers, and correspondence. This standard edition supersedes the four-volume edition of 1829. Includes a folding facsimile of Jefferson’s original four-page draft of the Declaration of Independence.
An outstanding provenance: Edwin B. Morgan, leading American financier, merchant, and philanthropist. First president of American Express, Morgan was also a founder and first president of Wells, Fargo & Company’s Express. A three-term congressman (1853-59) and leader of the nascent Republican party, Morgan was one of those who rescued Charles Sumner when he was beaten on the House floor.
