a humorous Einstein note

EINSTEIN, ALBERT. Autograph note signed

No place, no date c. 1950

3 x 5 in. index card. Fine.

Einstein writes in German, “This for the unlikely event that you would need it as much as I. With warm regards to all of you Your A. Einstein” (“Dies für den unwahrscheinlichen Fall, dass Sie es ebenso notwendig hätten als ich. Mit herzlichen Grüßen an Sie alle / Ihr A. Einstein”).

This note appears to have been written in response to an autograph request, perhaps for a friend of Einstein’s intimate friend Alice Kahler.

Provenance: acquired by us directly from Alice Kahler ca. 1990. Jewish Czech philosopher and historian Erich Kahler had left Nazi Germany in the 1930s and settled in Princeton in 1938. He married Alice (Lili) Loewy in Princeton, where the two were very close friends of fellow exile Albert Einstein.
